ATV OR UTV: WHAT'S BEST FOR MOAB, UTAH?

How to Choose the Right Off-Road Vehicle for Your Moab Trip: ATV or UTV?

Moab, Utah is a paradise for off-road enthusiasts, with its scenic trails and rugged landscapes. But before you embark on your adventure, you need to decide which type of vehicle to use: an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or a utility terrain vehicle (UTV). Both have their pros and cons, depending on your needs and preferences. Here are some key differences between them:

An ATV is a small vehicle that you ride on, not in. It has a seat that you straddle, like a motorcycle, and it is steered by handlebars. It can usually fit only one rider, although some models can accommodate two. An ATV is more agile and nimble than a UTV, and it can handle various terrains with ease. However, it also requires more skill and caution to operate, especially in Moab, where the terrain is steep and challenging. Riding an ATV can be dangerous if you are not experienced or careful enough. For ATVs, we recommend easier trails in Moab like: Onion Creek, Hurrah Pass, Chicken Corners, and Gemini Bridges.

A UTV is a larger vehicle that you sit in, like a car. It has a steering wheel, pedals, and a roll cage. It can fit a driver and a passenger, or sometimes more, depending on the model. A UTV is more stable and spacious than an ATV, and it can carry more people and equipment. It is ideal for situations that require more safety and comfort, such as family outings or long trips. However, it is also heavier and less maneuverable than an ATV, and it may not be able to access some narrow or tight spots. A UTV stands for Utility Terrain Vehicle or Utility Task Vehicle, which reflects its versatility and functionality.

At the Moab Tourism Center, we offer tours with UTVs only. We believe that UTVs are the best choice for exploring the Hell’s Revenge Trail, one of the most thrilling and scenic routes in Moab. UTVs can handle the steep slopes and sharp turns with ease, and they offer a safer and more comfortable ride.
